How to heal tattoo scars

Tattooing is more popular than ever. But it's never been a trivial procedure.
To inject the ink under the epidermis, the tattooist has to pierce the skin thousands of times with a needle containing a mixture of solvents and pigments. These are all considered small wounds to your skin, which open the door to bacteria. This is why it’s essential to take care of your tattoo to avoid infection, promote healing, and fully enjoy your new work of art.

A tattoo is a mark on your skin for life. Choose your tattooist carefully, making sure that they respect strict hygiene rules, and follow their care instructions scrupulously. Above all, be patient: your skin heals in stages. And the better the healing, the more beautiful your tattoo will be!

Recognising poor wound healing

Tips on how to recognise the signs of infection without panicking the moment you feel an itch or tickle.
In the first few days, your skin will be warm and will probably ooze a mixture of plasma and ink. Generally, as time goes on, your skin will start to peel and your tattoo will probably itch. This is normally a good sign! It means that your skin is renewing itself.

Any symptoms that are warning signs?

Yes, absolutely. If your tattoo has a sunken appearance, a suspicious discharge that persists, severe pain or redness, or you have a fever, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

Taking care of your tattoo

Good habits

For 2-3 weeks: cleanse and repair

At the end of the session, your tattoo artist will protect your tattoo with a transparent film which must be removed at a specified time. Then, 2 to 3 times a day: clean your tattoo with a physiological pH soap or clear water and gently pat dry. As soon as the epidermis has healed, you can apply a thin layer of scar healing cream.

All throughout your life: moisturise and protect your skin from the sun

Moisturise your tattoo regularly to maintain its vividness and protect it from the sun with a high protection cream (SPF 50+) to preserve the intensity of its colours. A beautiful tattoo is a life’s work!

FRIENDLY, EXPERT ADVICE

Want more tips for a beautiful tattoo?

  • Be uncompromising about your hygiene. Everything that comes into contact with your tattoo during the healing process must be clean: hands, towels, clothes, sheets, etc.
  • Don’t scratch your tattoo! You’ll risk tearing off the scabs and leaving scars.
  • Avoid swimming (baths, sea, swimming pool, but also saunas and spas).
  • Take a short break from any sports activities for 1 to 2 weeks after the tattoo: the epidermis needs to rest to heal properly.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to avoid chafing, which slows healing.
