Summary of the issue

Sensitising factors

Do you feel discomfort when a cold wind blows across your face? Does your skin ever feel hot or itchy when you apply a cosmetic product? Your skin is sensitive because its tolerance threshold to certain aggressors is lower than average. Identifying the factors that sensitise your skin will enable you to take better care of it.

Natural sensitivity to be taken into account

Some skin is naturally more fragile. Badly treated by life’s daily aggressors, it can easily become dehydrated. It is, therefore, often dry. You can also recognise it by its tendency to blush easily and the discomfort that can sometimes occur. Naturally sensitive skin requires special attention and care over the long term because the skin barrier needs to be strengthened.

Skin weakened by a cosmetic product or treatment

Some products applied to the skin every day contain dozens of components. Many of them may not be well-tolerated by your skin. They can, therefore, sensitise it further. Cosmetics are not the only products that can be aggressive. This is also the case with chemical peels, laser treatments, and even some acne treatments that may be too harsh for your sensitive skin.

Sensitivity due to a skin condition

The sensitivity of your skin may also be affected by a dermatological condition. Many conditions make the skin much more sensitive to external aggressors. Some of them, such as rosacea or atopic dermatitis, very often go hand in hand with sensitive skin and a weakened skin barrier. And some of the treatments used to treat these conditions can unfortunately take a toll on the skin.

What makes sensitive skin react?

Unsuitable cosmetics

Cosmetics are the main triggers of discomfort in sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is more likely to react to potentially irritating and sensitising substances found in some cosmetic products.

Environment and climate

Cold spells and low temperatures, hot sun, pollution or wearing a mask... Your skin is put to the test in all seasons and at all times. Environmental factors play an important role, as they can trigger discomfort in sensitive skin. Tightness, tingling, and also hot flushes: skin discomfort is quickly felt when faced with these daily external aggressors.

FRIENDLY (AND EXPERT) ADVICE

Those (bad) habits that make the skin react

If your skin is sensitive, be aware of small habits that can trigger unpleasant sensations or even visible signs such as redness. For example, it could be your diet: a spicy dinner or a glass of alcohol can create a visible skin reaction. Your emotions also play a role: for example, a bout of stress can trigger intense heat or redness (flushing). Identifying these triggers will help you avoid them and make it easier to set up a skincare routine tailored to your skin's needs.
